  • common names: “hen and chicks”
  • flowering season: summer
  • height: 3 to 4 inches; the flowers grow several inches taller
  • Light requirements: full sun
  • Soil requirements: average, well drained
  • Water requirments: low; drought tolerant
  • Growth habit: grows as a rosette or a tight cluster of leaves that do no normally send out runners the way the other “hen and chicks” known as Sempervivum usually do
  • How to propagate: Jovibarbas have to be cut with a knife to propagate the named varieties; this is best done in summer so that the warm sun will dry the surface of the cut tissue for several days before the pieces of plants are reset into soil
  • Leaf type: thick succulent leaves
  • Ways to use it: grows easily in a sunny rock garden or in pots
'Beacon Hill' combines rosy-purple and gray-green on its satiny leaves. Native to higher elevations in the Balkan Mountains, this is cold hardy to USDA Zone 4 (-20° to -30°F).

What is true for some other succulents applies equally to this plant, that showing it with a single photo is not completely accurate, because the colors can change with the different seasons of the year.
